Stabilizers

Hi Kathy,
I have friends who own embroidery machines and they are always talking about different types of stabilizers. What are stabilizers, and do I really need them since I don't own an embroidery machine?

Stabilizers are available in a variety of types; these include paper like types often referred to as "tearaways", non-woven types that are designed to remain behind the fabric called "cutaways", and types that will dissolve in water, known as "water-soluble".
